Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – The Mayoralty of Baghdad officially launched its extensive spring afforestation and planting campaign on Tuesday, a major step in the city’s strategic plan to combat climate change, reduce pollution, and expand urban green zones. The initiative aligns with the national environmental goals set by the Prime Minister’s administration to restore Baghdad’s historic reputation as a City of Gardens. Municipal Deputy for the Baghdad Mayoralty, Razzaq al-Yaqubi, explained that the current greening efforts are divided into two primary tracks: The National Program: Under the direct guidance of PM Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, this track focuses on mega-projects.
This includes the transformation of the former Al-Rasheed Military Camp into the massive Baghdad Forests and the continued development of the Green Belt surrounding the capital. Seasonal Municipality Campaigns: The second track involves the Mayoralty’s routine seasonal efforts. The current Spring Campaign, which commenced on March 12, is the largest of its kind in recent years.
The spring initiative has already achieved significant milestones across Baghdad’s various districts: Tree Planting: 300,000 trees and shrubs have been distributed and planted in coordination with local municipal and park departments. Floral Expansion: Over three million flowers and ornamental plants have been added to medians and public squares. New Public Spaces: 15 new parks and gardens were inaugurated this month to provide much-needed recreational space for families. Long-term Goal: The plan aims to add a total of 162 dunams (approximately 40 acres) of new green spaces by the end of 2026.
