Kasungu Municipality Mayor Hastings Nyirongo has asked well-wishers to support needy students remain in school to achieve their goals. He said this on Sunday during the opening of a students’ camp organised by The Sonder Project. The camp, in progress at Loyola Secondary School in the district, has brought together secondary school learners that the organisation supports.
The girls following proceedings. | Wanangwa Tembo “There is a need for duty-bearers and stakeholders to support vulnerable learners to stay in school. Education remains a powerful tool for unlocking opportunities, but it requires collective effort to make it accessible to all,” said Nyirongo. The mayor challenged the students to work hard in school, saying that will be the best way to reciprocate the gesture.
The Sonder Project country director Beria Michembo Mwaulambo said the organisation remains committed to empowering students through education and personal development initiatives. He said: “We currently support 139 secondary school students in Malawi, all from rural communities in Kasungu District. “Beyond financial support, we focus on holistic development to ensure students succeed both academically and personally.” Mwaulambo said the camp is designed to create a supportive environment where students can grow and connect.
“We also want to provide a supportive space for peer interaction and mentorship and distribute school supplies in preparation for the upcoming term,” she said. A beneficiary Successor Mwale from St Mauritious Secondary School in Rumphi, thanked the organisation for the support. The Sonder Project, a non-governmental organisation working in Malawi and Burkina Faso, has been implementing its Education is Power programme in Kasungu since 2020.
